metal stage, act 1

In this theatrical installation, the viewer is seduced to slip into a hyper real performance show in which one takes on the lead singers role. Vocal input completes the installation and is instantly transformed into an immersive, multi-sensorial composition in multi-channel sound, stroboscopic light and vapour. Precomposed harsh sound textures of digital glitch and distorted noise are fused and layered with the natural voice of the viewer and played out at very high volume to release an almost visceral power. Depending on the nature and quality of the noises produced by the viewer the audio-visual elements are constantly recomposed, with more complex and intense patterns the stronger the vocal input. In a playful and exhilarating manner the self-created large-scale noise quickly surpasses the human capacity in speed, complexity and volume. Thereby, the installation breaks the natural function of the voice as a signifier of the self by replacing and abstracting all lingual and extra-lingual content. This offers a disorienting yet engaging, liberating and even cathartic experience.

The precomposed audio on which the real-time generation of the sound stream is partly based has received an honorary mention at the Ars Electronica (section Digital Music, 2004).
